So here at school we have a Honors Convocation Awards. For English there are four awards that you can try out for:
The Andrew James Purdy Prize for Short Fiction The Gertrude Claytor Poetry Prize of the Academy of American Poets The Hollins Fiction Prize Melanie Hook Rice Memorial Awards in Fiction/Creative Non-fiction. The first award is only for graduate students, the second is only for poetry, and the last is for those that would be entering parts of a novel they're working on. I'm not a graudate student, I don't write poetry, and I'm not currently working on a novel, so I entered the Hollins Fiction Prize. The deadline was today, I turned in yesterday, and I'm pretty sure only one other person entered for the Hollins Fiction Prize as well. I'm anxious to know what's going to happen because everything is going to be judged by an outside judge and as far as I know it's only between me and one other person. I really hope I win it, though I will be happy for the other person that wins as well, because I at least took the time to try for it. But I think my idea is really original as it's a urban fiction story about a girl that's a student by day and a gang member by night. But since she's a new gang member (or as they call them, a fringe) she has trouble deciding where her loyalties lie; with her gang or with her family.
