So, in the past month I ended two my internships. They were both online and they were both great. And they both didn't offer any advancement or payment in the long run. This was a deciding factor in ending my work, but it wasn't the main factor.
Internships are a great way to gain experience in the field you want to work in, or help contribute to future planning. My two internships were online and it really helped because I could work around my own schedule and not feel rushed with deadlines for assignments. Although, that was the main reason why I put in my 2 weeks notice: they were online. At first, it was great, but then I was starting to wonder if people will take my resume seriously if I only had online work. Apparently it does because it helped me get my current internship for the summer. But, just that little glimmer of doubt made me want to put in my 2 weeks notice. Plus, there would be periods where I'd either be doing a lot or doing very little. Now, I'm not saying I didn't enjoy my time with both companies. One was health and video games while the other was about fashion. Both companies were very interesting and I gained more experience than i thought i would. So do i wish they would have lead to a job/position with their company: yes. However, with the experience I gained, I'm sure it'll lend towards my being able to obtain the job/career I want, one way or another. Take care, -SJ

I've had a few people tell me over the years that they wish they had my creativity. Of course, I'm flattered when people give me this compliment, however they don't know the problems that come with a creative mind.
You get new ideas. A lot of them. All the time. All. the. time. And that, in itself, is a problem. Well, not a problem, but the problem. I have a lot of hobbies. I love to read, write, draw, paint, craft, sing, play piano, play clarinet, sew, knit, and design. With all of these hobbies come new ideas. Normally, I'm very organized, but when I get an idea for a new project I just have to get to work. For example, I'm currently working on the prequel to the Bluebonnet series, Cassie & Nikki. In the middle of working on this I get new ideas for new books I want to write. I have a two page long document (almost 3 pages) saved with all of my book or story ideas. I have a habit of working on something, and when i get a new idea, I "drop" my first project and then focus on the new idea. However, its not all bad because some of my ideas can intertwine. Currently, I have ideas for a new music project. I've been wanting to record and write music again for the longest time. Luckily, I can bring my writing and/or other hobbies into it as well. Take care, -SJ I just finished my first week at my summer internship. Things have been going great so far. I love it here in the apartment and the area around it. A lot of things are in walking distance so that I don't need car. I found a few new shops and restaurants that I would love to venture to. I also found the exercise room and the pool for the apartment I'm staying in.
Here's a recap of my week: Saturday: Moved into the apartment with my roommate and went grocery shopping. Unpacked everything and got settled in. Sunday: Nothing. I pretty much did nothing all day. I took it as a free day to relax and just be comfortable before I started my internship the next day. My boss stopped by to see if we were settled in and to tell me and my roommate where we'd be working. My roommate and I are both interns at the same place but in different departments. Monday: I woke up early around 5 am because of a garbage truck picking up the recycling and trash. I grumbled, turned over, and then went back to sleep where I woke up around 6:45. I decided then to just read until I absolutely had to get up and get ready for work. Around 7:40 I leave the apartment and drive to work. I really don't know how I missed it when I went to the apartments. My boss wasn't kidding, it is in walking distance. So I arrived around 7:45-7:50ish and head over to the building where I was directed. The door was locked. I knew my boss wouldn't be there because she was on vacation (a friend of hers offered her family the use of their beach house for free -- i don't blame her for going), and i knew one of my co-workers/supervisors wouldn't arrive until 9:15. At that point, i go back to my car and wait...and wait...and wait until about 8:15 when someone arrived. At this point, three things bothered me: 1) the dump truck waking me up so early, 2) arriving early to my internship (which started at 8) and no one else arriving till later, and 3) it wasn't business casual. I was told during my interview that clothing was business casual but when one of my co-workers/supervisors showed up i noticed right away it was relaxed dress. I could have saved room in my suitcase. So, when i get into the building i am directed to my office and i log-into everything i need. I goof around the computer until Lyn, my helper for the week, arrived and took me on a tour on campus. She knew I was a Hollins graduate and a multiple and she had to tell everyone we met; about the latter. She just loved the story. After the tour i goofed around more on the computer, had lunch with everyone of my co-workers/supervisors, and then headed out at 1pm. (I work from 8-1). My roommate and I headed to the movie theaters that afternoon. Tuesday: I woke up around 7:15 and didn't leave the apartment until about 7:50-7:55 since the drive is so close. I learned a new part of the Advancement Office. It was all about marketing and social media. Another intern, Kenya, and I got along. She's African-American, a year out of college, and is a Virgo like me. Our birthdays are 3 days apart! I learned how to use the mail machine. It helps seals envelopes before distribution. Wednesday: At work, i learned about the program Raiser's Edge. Its a database program. Its tedious. Its boring. Everyone in my office knows and agrees with that statement. I was given a packet to read and go over the program. Some of my supervisors say to go over it "when you have nothing to do because its very boring". Also, I should hide whenever something with the database needs to be done. I took a walk around outside. I stumbled upon the pool the apartment user's use. It's an outdoor pool by the river. I would have used it since its been so hot this past week, but I wasn't changed and there was no shade at all outside so I was sure I was going to burn very easily. Plus (as weird as it sounds), I didn't want to walk in the heat to it, cool off, and then walk in the heat back to the apartment. Also, I just recently washed my hair and I didn't want to have to wash my hair twice in a matter of a few days. Thursday: I learned about Alumni Relations and Events about the school. Since I'm an alumni to two schools now, I pretty much understood everything that was mentioned. For the rest of the day I either continued to read the packet on Raiser's Edge or watched videos on YouTube. Today I learned that I get two days off for Independence Day weekend. So my plan is to travel home after my last day of work that week (Tuesday), spend some time there, and then head back to the apartment Saturday so I don't have to deal with holiday traffic. Plus, while I'm home i need to pick up a few things and get something for my car. My sisters and one of my brothers dropped by today. They were traveling to have a meeting at my sister's grad school and to look at apartments. They stopped by my apartment so I could give them a gps they left in my car. It was a quick visit but it was good to see them. So, that was my first week. The accompanying video may have more information or less, I never really know when I started recording. Please go check it our and subscribe to our channel. Stay turned for the next post. Take care! --SJ So, I have an internship this summer so I had to move to a new city to work on-site. Well, it isn't a new city, I've been here before but I've never lived her. The drive down wasn't that bad, although there was some traffic here and there. It was mainly from accidents and I'm sure beach vacation travel.
My dad and sisters helped me move. We had some initial problems at first. I followed the instructions of parking in the interior parking lot, going up the stairs, take the elevator to the third floor, and then go to room #309. The wrong person answered the door, whoever she helped direct me where I needed to go. When she noticed that my sisters and I were multiples she was in so much shock she pretty much hyperventilated. So, we fixed the problem. Apparently, we were in the wrong building and we had to go one building over. I had knocked on room #9309 and not just #309. You would have thought that that number would have tipped me off, but i just thought it was the way the numbering system was for the apartment building and just had 9's in front of the room numbers. So we find the right parking lot and the right apartment for #309, got my keys and then moved in. My sisters were in shock. I had seen pictures online before hand so I knew what was coming. There are two bedrooms both with two full bed bunk beds and its own bathroom and walk in closet. It has a kitchen with dishwasher, a dining room/living room, and washing machine and dryer. Also, somewhere in the building is the common room, gym/sports center, and a pool. My apartment mate and I are sharing a room. There are two bedrooms where each bedroom has its own bathroom and walk in closet. Each bedroom has two full sized beds but they are bunk beds. From what we're been told, no one else is moving in with us so we're confused as to why we have to share a room. I'm not against sharing a room because I'm used to it. We decided we're going to use the spare room as a guest room if we have guests over. We're also each using a bathroom so we don't have to share. On our trip to the grocery store we found a movie theater in walking distance, shops/markets in walking distance, african american hair place, nail place, Popeyes, tons of cultural food places like Thai, Chinese, Japanese, etc, and we also found numerous banks, a dentist, and eye place. I haven't found a Subway yet. I'm worried that I may go broke by the end of the summer. I'm fully unpacked right now, and tomorrow I'm going to explore to find the gym/sports center and the pool. But most importantly, I need to find a gas station for future trips. More updates will be posted over the summer! :) -SJ It is now June 1st 2014. I know, what you're thinking -- where did the time go?? I'm feeling the same way. On May 25th, my sisters and I graduated college. It was a short ceremony (about an hour/hour and a half long) and we had a lot of family members come out to see us. 15 people to be exact. We basically caught a lot of people's attention which I was expecting. Graduation weekend was a lot of fun: I got my hair and nails done, watched X-Men: Days of Future Past, and spent more time with my Aunt Kris. It stinks that I only get to see her and my Uncle about 1 to 2 times a year, but its always a great time whenever we get together.
