So for my "Writing The American Sitcom" class we have the ultimate goal at the end of the month to write a episode script for a sitcom. (Like you couldn't see that coming). Since class started we have brainstormed what shows we would like to write an episode for. My Dad suggested I do mine on the show 2 Broke Girls. I had never seen it before but fro what I heard about it, I thought it would be interesting, so it was the idea that I had in mind as the class went on.
Our homework that was due for today was to come up with three episode ideas that you would pitch to the class. My ideas were: Pitch 1: Max and Caroline have to get cupcakes to an event by a certain amount of time and they’re only able to take public transportation which doesn’t go their way. Complication 1: Being late will have them lose their client Complication 2: Every piece of public transportation they get, doesn’t work out (subway, bus, taxi) Complication 3: Eventually have to run there and risk ruining cupcakes on the way Pitch 2: Max is babysitting and she is accused of being a shoplifter Complication 1: Her increasing anger over being accused doesn’t help her case Complication 2: She is believed to be the kids’ mother and orchestrating the event when it’s found out the kids took the item Complication 3: She can’t tell the kids’ mother because she’s afraid she’d lose the job and tarnish the reputation of hers and Caroline’s shop Pitch 3: Max and Caroline cater an event and can’t get the person that hired them to pay Complication 1: They don’t want to be seen as pushy/offend their client Complication 2: If they don’t get paid, they can’t continue to ruin their shop Complication 3: They try to find different ways to get her to pay which all backfire I decided to go with the first ideas as it's the one that seems that would bring out the most laughs. We had to pitch them to each other today and my group members really liked the idea. The best part of the day was that we had to sign up for conferences to talk about outlines we have to make for the episode. The conferences are tomorrow, Thursday, and Friday. Most students, of course, want to do theirs Thursday or Friday, otherwise they have to do their work tonight and tomorrow. So I was gearing to go on Friday, but considering where the teacher started the sign up sheet, I knew I was going to be doing mine tomorrow. I was a little bummed at first: Me: Ugh! Tha means I have to do homework tonight. Mack: I was planning on taking the day off. Miss. Foster (our teacher): Well, if you have your conference tomorrow, I don't expect a lot of it to be done, but if you're doing yours Thursday or Friday, I'm expecting a lot more. So that's the plus side. Yes! Thank god! Everyone that signed up for later now has to have, like, their whole thing done and I only have to have the general idea of my outline. And then have the final draft done on Monday?! That's the perfect deal for me. Especially since I haven't really watched 2 Broke Girls before. (I'm on episode 2 and I really like it). I think this class is really going to test me on my ability to write something funny and have it sound natural compared to forced (I think some of my funnier moments in my writing are forced) and how my timing works well with it in the writing. I'm really excited for it. Peace.
